Rock'n'Roll! Yesterday the countdown was over! There he was: the day of the days! The day the team trained long time ago!
Friday night the whole crowd of transalpine runners met in Ruhpolding 2010 an on Saturday the first stage was startet. Within this crazy crowd...the 4 gore merchis. While they are running all day long I (Davids brother) will report the next days about the run and the shape of the men in tights. The first 2 days I spent in the Alps to follow the runners...at least I tried to follow. And I can tell you: they had 2 great days. On Saturday the run from Ruhpolding (Germany) to St. Ulrich (Austria) and today from St. Ulrich to Kitzbühl. In total the first 70 km an 3000 m altitude distance are done!! But fotos speaks much louder than words. Here are some impressions of the first two stages...

just unbelievable 3 days left to the start in Ruhpolding. Nice words from a friend: "FINALLY the race is coming closer, I don't want to train anymore!" :)
I think for most of the participants this last week includes very few training. You just keep moving a little bit your muscles, no very long or hard runs anymore before the start. My cut was on Saturday when I had my last long running test for my injured foot. I had a more or less good and stable feeling during 27 km. So that was my final "GO"! I'm ready!!
Ready for the catwalk over the Alps! :) Last week I received a nice package from CEP that makes it easier for the masses of supporters to recognize us during the race. Besides the super functional and stylish running clothes of Gore Running Wear® in black now we are wearing GREEN. We got some performance improving running socks from CEP. Thanks so much for that!
For all the supporters of their runners who are looking for news during the race, check these pages for up-coming news:
Here I am again.
Dear friends, runners, supporters and lovers!
It's getting serious. Our countdown on the left side needs less space. Only just one digit now: 9 (NINE!). During the last weeks the time really run, the digits ran away. Especially for me during doing nothing because of my injury. The last 10 days I used to get used again to run. The last time, on Monday, for the first time it was something like (almost) running again. But the dominating feeling now is not DEPRESSION because I couldn't run for some weeks, well, that happens, it always could be better. Now I'm really looking forward to seeing my boys next week, hopefully everybody healthy, to march with them to the starting lines. To get this GOOSEBUMPS together with 500 people. To suffer 8 days together. To reach our goal all together. Cross the Alps TOGETHER!!
I have to admit during the last runs I just have to think more and more about the up-coming race, possible emotions and so much more...
so I'm not sure in what mood I am right now? :)
Is it this wonderful tension before the competition....
the sound that landed this morning in my postbox.
or is it more this "bäm bäm bäm dä däm"-feeling during the last training runs in the woods of Bayreuth...
Still don't know. But it feels good.
You feel the tension everywhere. The internet is full of more or less nervous debutants, and even the cool old hands get more and more "let's get it started"-feeling. And everyone from all over the world meets here.
So everybody: keep on running and take care during your easy-going running units.
But sometimes, even the best are stopped by their bodies... and I'm not talking about myself. :D
I feel so sorry for Caitlin Smith, last year's winner of the GORE-TEX® Transrockies Run, she had to leave the race this year after only 2 stages. Best wishes to her.
She missed this crazy run through a lot of water. Don't know if I'm prepared for THAT...
Cheers everybody!
David
By the way... can you hear it... tic tac tic tac... Did I say it already?? - 9 days!
I really can't believe it - just 14 days left to the start in Ruhpoldingen, just 2 (!!) weeks.
The GORE-TEX® Merchi Emotions teams start in this last past of the preparations under different conditions.
Thorsten will be back from a sweet relaxing week in the Greek sun after the last hard training weeks. I'm sure he'll be back on track with a lot of power for the race. Yes, I'm sure he's on fire.
Michael an Thorsten were for a third last training camp in the Zillertal last weekend. While I was listening to sweet music at the Haldern Pop festival they ran over 60 km with nearly 5000 ascending meter. Respect!
Franky is training well at home in Munich and in the surroundings.
Well, and finally I'm back in "training", too. It's really hard to see that the past 3 weeks without training because of my injury were just too long and in a very important training phase... At the moment my goal is just to stand at the starting line with a good feeling about my ankle. For the rest I have my captain. :)
A bit more than three weeks before the start in Ruhpolding the organization team from Plan B published some very important changes of the course we will be running this year.
Firstly 2010 will be the year with the longest GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run ever with over 300 km now, 305 km exactly.
Furthermore, for safety reasons, some alpine parts were cut and so we will have to ascend about 4000 m less than planned before.
Stage 3 is now 47 km long by the way... :)
The reactions from the runners are different. For me personally it's not the worst thing because of my missed 3 weeks where I couldn't run in the mountains.
Other runners say it's too flat now! I don't know if you really can say that the GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run can be too flat...
Discussions about that you find on our page on facebook.
So everybody enjoy your last hard training days!!!
Cheers. David
Actually that really really sucks. Still can't run. The last weeks should have been the time with a lot of kilometers... My left foot didn't let me run at all. Besides I have a bad cold at the moment. The feeling right know (physical/mental) is so much different compared with 3 weeks ago.
Damn, these are not my days...
Thorsten and Michael maybe will have their last trainings camp in the Alps this weekend. I'm so jealous!!!
I really hope that your preparation for the race of the year is really going better than mine.
Friends!
I know it's been a while. The last week was kind of a "struggling" week...
But befor these days our team had a really nice time in the Alps (Zillertal) again. This time were weren't only 4 runners, we had a very special guest runner from Bayreuth - Fabian. He is an IRONMAN (Frankfurt, last year) and we would lie if we don't say that we are a little bit proud that we got the power out of this machine. :)
The program during this weekend was:
Sunday, 11.7.2010, sometimes it's not that easy to find the right trail! :)
Move 5:34'57 hours, 129 bpm, 28,96 km
Saturday, 10.7.2010 - SUN SUN SUN
Move 5:22'00.7 hours, 138 bpm, 31,88 km
Friday, 9.7.2010, around Gindlalm - awesome!
Move 2:54'29.8 hours, 143 bpm, 23,24 km
After the weekend and a following regeneration run I started a short fast run on Wednesday... Wasn't my luckiest day. I twisted my left ankle in the streets of Bayreuth. It already happened before in the mountains two times in the 2 weeks before, but it never was too bad, I even could run the next days.
Well, unfortunately I have some "experience" with twisted ankles and ruptered ligaments. This time I knew that something very stupid happend. I was really really pissed and thought about millions of things during the first seconds when I couldn't run anymore... It's over... Everything... The whole training... Who carries the water for the captain... and so on... you are just angry with your f...ing feet...
Well, this story will find an end. I changed to thinking more positve again in the last days.
Today I got the results of the MRT: (At least) 10-14 days NO RUNNING at all and foot bandage day and night... Probably that sounds very bad for you, not motivating at all, right. But it's better than: David, forget the race and try it next year. Somehow I will make it... and carry the water for Thorsten!
Keep ya head up! And you: Keep on running! I would love to... - David -
Dear readers,
Team GORE-TEX® Merchi Emotions is back from a very exciting and active weekend.
For some of us it was kind of a long journey until we arrived at this wonderful hut in the Zillertal but it was absolutely worth it!
On Friday, Franky, Michael and David startet with some (in comparison to the other two days) relaxed 20 km to the Märzengrund including 800 ascending meters. The weather during the whole weekend was just perfect and we enjoyed running as a team, not lonesome in Bayreuth, München, Absberg or where else...
On Saturday the Team GORE-TEX® Merchi Emotions was complete for the first time to train together. "El Capitano" arrived and showed us the way up from Stumm to the peak of Gehdrechten. :) About 23 km and 1640 ascending meters.
On the photo you can see us before we started to Stumm. It's not a coincidence that we look THAT nice. :) Since this weekend we have a very nice team outfit from GORE RUNNING WEAR™. We all are very happy with the awesome clothes and it is a good feeling that everybody sees that we are reaching the top of a mountain as a team!!
On Sunday we did for the first time something that is at least a little bit similar to a GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run stage. We started in Mayrhofen all the way up to Penken and finally we reached the top of the Wanglspitz. All in all about 33 km and 2000 ascending meters. It was really a tough day in the heat and after the 5 hours all of us were tired but happy. And the best thing was that we arrived "at home" just in time for the great match of GERMANY against ENGLAND. What a lovely game. :) The following clip comments the game better than any words...
This weekend showed everyone of us what's going well and what could be (much) better. For sure, everyone of us four had the thoughts on Sunday: WHAT AM I DOING HERE...?!?! But the questions disappeared again and we all got motivated even more. 2 month left... tick tack tick tack...
The detailed insights of our training you can get, as always, on movescount.com. Feel free to join our group and train together!
6.28 am. David is leaving Bayreuth.
8.13 Michael is picking up David in Pleinfeld.
12.30. Awesome lunch at "Jackl's".
14.30. Third runners joins the partybus to the Zillertal.
16.30 late arrival the Jackl's hut.
17.15. START to the Merzengrund
2.55 h later... back home. sweet weather. 20 km. 850 ascending meters. good vibes.
we are looking forward to welcoming the "teamchef" thotti the downhill machine.
ah, i forgot: 23.15 h: Michael is almost sleeping like a baby!
so, you see, everything is sweet a-la-la-la-la-long.
Dear all...
what a sad afternoon yesterday. Altough everything in Germany was standing still during 13.30 h and 15.15 h, just watching TV in the offices, no one in the streets... - it didn't help. The Spanish referee created a colourful time with a bad end for Lukas Podolski, Holger Badstuber and the other goalless players... Let's see what will happen in the game against Kevin-Prince Boateng.
Well, at least we saw a very nice game between Switzerland and Spain some days before with an unexpected end, too. Until today only Argentina is playing really strong of the championship favourites.
But... back to Switzerland. I had a very nice weekend in Lausanne with dear friends!! The weather was just perfect, so much sun, the lake still freezing and the mountains were beautiful. I did not do real runs, just one day hiking near Montreux. In between I ran some kilometers, especially downhill I recognized the difference again between the hills in Bayreuth and the Alps. :)
Even though I didn't have long training runs over there it really got me motivated just to be in the Alps, the landscape... I just love it.
Back in Bayreuth the weather is changing a lot. On Wednesday the sun made me weak, but yesterday Fabi and I had perfect running weather with some rain at the end and everything appeared so much easier. Even some pain in my knees couldn't stop me. Rarr Rarr!! It's so much better to have a nice training partner. We definitely should do run together more often.
Another funny thing is: From now on I'm really looking forward to arriving at home after long runs. My friends (including me) will laugh, but I'm mixing a delicious regenerating protein drink. It was sooo yummie, vanilla taste mixed with a fresh peach. Well, times change. I have never used drinks like that in my life. But it tastes great and if it supports my regeneration - even better!!
From next Tuesday on I will have more time again to run. Without always having other things in mind I should do... And if everything works out I see Franky and Thorsten in Munich next Sunday for the Munich City Run.
at the moment I've got the feeling that the time is running. One week is over again... Last week I didn't train much at all. Well, it's really hard to take (or have) the time to run when there is an exam waiting next door... But it's over. And though the runs I did were really great. I'm really falling in love with my forests around Bayreuth, almost everytime I'm finding some new nice trails.
Especially today I recognized my hidden love to Bayreuth's sourroundings because I'm in Brühl! And my run was... well, not good... It was really hot, I had no water, no music, no up- and downhill parts at all. There was just my personal fight against my watch... Actually I didn't feel very well afterwards, wasn't my day...
I'm sure there'll be better times. Tomorrow I escape from Brühl to the mountains. Actually "only" to visit a good friend but also to enjoy the great nature in Switzerland during some runs. Besides some chees fondue. :)
The other 3 GORE-TEX® Merchis are really focused on the mountains this weekend. They have their first "trainings camp" in the Zillertal. It's a pity that I can't join them but I'm really excited what they will tell me (and hopefully YOU, too!! we want impressions in the blog my friends) about their runs over there.
It seems that we four see each other (all of us!!) at the end of June at the half-marathon in Munich. At least it's planned.
Dear friends,
after over one week I'm finally back again. From the other 3 wannabe-Transalpine-runners you haven't heard a lot or nothing either since a long time.
What are they doing? Are they really training for September? Can you see an advance of our performance?
Actually that's what I'm asking myself frequently...
But now I have really good news. The times of big words without facts are over! :)
With the very nice support of SUUNTO we are now equiped with our new babies: SUUNTO t6c. What can I say: I like! From now on every of our move is counted. But the best thing is a very simple but stylish tool and sports community which allows me to "control" my wannabes. :) Or just makes me think: Damn it, Thorsten already had his 20 km run today, I have to move my little ass, too!! The Online-Tool is called movescount. There I upload my trainings data within seconds.
For your first impression you can check my profile or the moves of the group "our adventure GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run".
Actually it would be great if many of you, Transalpine-Runners or anybody else who reads this blog, join us, publish your facts about your training! It's really easy and it's not necessary that you own a SUUNTO watch.
I'm looking forward to this "trainings group". :)
Supero David!!!
Wednesday: 10 quick 80 sec runs in the "Studentenwald" with 120 sec breaks (10 min. running in and out)
Friday: 75 min run (35 min. slowly, following 40 min. faster)
Sunday: Half-marathon (Maisel's Fun Run)
Without much sleep the night before (thanks lovely STEREO TOTAL! :) ) my race on Sunday was fine. We started with sunshine and finished in the rain. I got my best time during the last 5 kilometers. Before sometimes it was a bit hard to follow my friend Alex. But with the rain my power came back.
So I actually could finish the race with a very good feeling, not much pain and with motivation for the up-coming week.
Well, my time was 1:36:03. That's fine...
First of all i want to say that I'm really happy to see that today there are already 170 "fans" from 20 different countries on facebook that are interested in "our adventure GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run 2010". Thanks a lot!!
I'm definitely still following my goal this year in September. It's amazing how often I'm thinking about the upcoming pain in September. :) Seriously, it's so good to have a goal again. We also decided on purpose to make it public, for example with this blog, that we 4 stupid men really want to this race. Now we just can't hide. And that is really good how it is.
So I can't hide the trainingless last week either. After the Heidelberg marathon i had to go back to Bayreuth very quickly to finish some important things for university. I just didn't really leave my desk (instead of a historical night in Ergersheim, but that is another story... :D).
But since Monday night my head is relaxed again, I enjoy sleeping and training again!
A 62 min run with Fabian and Georg was a very good start on tuesday, I also got to know a new track here in Bayreuth (thanks Fabi!).
Yesterday I did 10 quick 80 sec runs in the "Studentenwald" with 120 sec breaks. Afterwards I felt tired, but as always after quick and intensive units, you just know what you did! :) Well, you know what I mean...
Today is a relaxing rainy day, tomorrow I some calm 80 min are planned.
On Sunday I will run a "training" half marathon, this time a flat one. Well I can' expect anything, but it's nice to run in your own city, participating in the Maisel's Fun Run.
I'm sure a nice STEREO TOTAL concert with friends in Nürnberg on Saturday gets me motivated a lot. :)
I'm back in Bayreuth from a very nice weekend in Heidelberg.
It was great to see Thorsten again since September! The weather on Sunday was perfect and the hilly track was tough. At least for me. :) If you are looking for an extraordinary half marathon you should run in Heidelberg next year!
The results of team "GORE-TEX® Merchi Emoitons I" and our friends & family:
Thomas 1:38:19
Adrian: 1:38:20 (such a pity that Thomas and Adrian started in different groups!)
I arrived in Brühl yesterday night, already one more week left... This week wasn't filled with training at all. I started it in Feldkirchen-Westerham (Feki) because of a job I had to do over there. Jürgen from GORE-TEX® Footwear who knows every single trail around Feki showed my on google earth a very nice 15 km trail. As you can imagine it's much easier to see the trail on the screen: "straight on, than right, next left, along the river..." and so on... :) Well, I had a very interesting 2 hours orientation trail run without a map - but not at all on the track Jürgen showed me. :D Actually I wanted to run about 90 min, but after the first hour I needed another hour to orientate and get back to where I started. But the first hour I really loved to run, it was awesome and the best trail I ran this year!
During the next days I got a little bit ill and tired. It didn't work out to run with Franky and Thorsten.
Finally I didn't train until today. Still have a little bit a cold but in the next hour I will run very relaxed 30 min or something like that, just to get moved my legs. And tomorrow the half marathon is waiting. Thorsten will arrive tonight in Brühl. It's good to see him after a long time, since months.
The weather forecast for tomorrow is very nice, maybe even to warm, but I think at 10 a.m. when we start it should be very nice running weather.
Actually I don't expect nothing from the race but a nice running day with Thorsten, my siblings and dear friends.
Ohne Essen geht einfach gar nichts.
Nice to see that now Frank is also writing here in the blog and I'm sure his posts will be filled with more "GORE-TEX® Merch Emotions" very soon! :)
Maybe we will see each other in Feldkirchen during the next days because I'll spend three days there. Even Thorsten is over there and can probably join a run. I'm excited if he is in shape for the up-comming half-marathon next Sunday in Heidelberg. Today he ran 17,5 km he told me. 17,5 km more than me...
My running week didn't feel that good. But it was OK, there were more important things and friends to celebrate...
training this week:
Monday: Up-Hill-Runs at the "Festspielhaus-Wall", 20 Min running in and out, 8 runs (2 series), : first 4: 62-64 sec, next 3: 65-68 sec and the last one: 61 sec! :) Pause 2.30 - 4.00 min. - just felt very very tired afterwards ... but it's good to know what you've done!
Tuesday: very nice 56 min run in best mood through the "Studentenwald"
Thursday: moderate 58 min with Flo
Saturday: 62 min. felt very weak... just doesnt't work without eating before running.
The second week after Brasil was already much better than the first. Just nicer. A lot of sun, a lot of nice running partners. And step by step I get used to (almost) daily running.
Yesterday I only had Thomas' words in mind: "Next week at least one time more than 100 min!"
So... yesterday my first "long" run... 1h 45 min. I know you're all laughing about this, but hey, I'm happy about how everything is going. Step by step... As you can see on the right side of the page: still 145 days left to the start in Ruhpolding!
Until September I can push it a lot...
My training this week:
monday: 4-5-6-5-3 min, 2.30 min jogging between, 10 min running-in / 8 min -out, total: 50 min
tuesday: one hour personal trainer for a nice runner. nice run for me, too. total: 60 min
thursday: breath taking 52 min with Bene, nice pace, total 52 min
friday: short 42 min quicky with stretching
saturday: lonesome 145 min around the "Festspielhaus" with a lot of motivational music. felt very good between 1 h and 1 h 30 min.
sunday: washing my CEP running socks...
keep on running!
Feel free to comment here or on facebook!

YES. It was my heart. thanks to my drill instructor thomas, like in good old times, we had a very intensive goodbye-brühl-easter-egg-run on monday.
Yeah, the big limitation and reason why you just saw your running partner running away, David, was your heart. Good to feel it.
If somebody knows what a "Fahrtspiel" is in English, let me know. Well, we played with the pace. :)
monday: 4-5-6-5-3 min, 2.30 min jogging between, 10 min running-in / 8 min -out, total: 50 min.
tuesday: one hour personal trainer for a nice runner. nice run for me, too. total: 60 min
If you are asking yourself sometimes: Where is the limit? Our friend Josef Ajram doesn't know, but he knows where it's not... Today he is running 82 km in the desert - 4th stage of the Marathon de Sable!
The spring is coming, even in Bayreuth.
Get moving. Even if it's just with the music in your office.
In diesem Sinne:
Junge, da war doch was...!!
-----------------------------------------------
one month in Brasil is over.
now I know again how sweet the live can be.
back in Germany, as expected, I don't have to tell a lot about many kilometers on the beach. the aim of my trip were other experiences. After a great time with friends on beautiful places I'm really relaxed and recharged my energy. It's good to see that I'm really looking forward to running again. My home tracks are waiting until I will return to Bayreuth where I will have the opportunity to check how fit is Michael. :)
For Thorsten an me 4 weeks are left until the Heidelberg half marathon. 4 weeks to get a good running feeling back. should be enough...
I have to admit that i will miss the sun in Rio de Janeiro. A coco nut water in the sun and 32 °C. Yeah, a bit different to the rain that is actually getting more and more at this moment...
Well, I know, the live can't be always sweet...
The gripmaster created a very nice emotional video about the GORE-TEX Transalpine Run 2009.
16 minutes of sweet trail running.
Stephan always films during running and gets pictures you normally never see...
so...
Bin also weiterhin sehr positiv gestimmt.
In diesem Sinne - frohes Laufen.
David
--------------------------------------
I try my best in English. :) It's not a translation exactly. It's not about the language here, it's about the content. It's not about finding grammatical mistakes... :) Thanks...
[the song above is another motivation on my mp3]
Well...
my last exams are done. for me it's always a bit hard to get motivated to run during learning sessions, to take you the time tu run. actually it's very stupid because after a run in the snow I'm feeling so much better. you see I'm not the smartest... Soon I return to my hometown Brühl, looking forward for some nice "last" runs in my favourite areas. there I know a lot more nice tracks even if i found some nice spots in bayeuth, too. and in bayreuth you even find some "hills". if somebody finds something that isn't flat in Brühl please tell me!!
all members of the GORE-TEX(R) Merchi Emotions are kind of busy at the moment. Finishing thesis, learning for important exams or working for the title sponsor. so it's up to us to keep on running. i have the impression my teamchef is doing very well. there are not many days off running. after finishing his thesis in some weeks he will also tell you a little bit of his training life in this blog. be patient with him. :)
normally I'm just some days away of my "trainings camp" in south amercia. ok, actually my last big vacations before september. hope i can handle with this month more or less off running. we'll see. some beach running etc will be possible. but until now nothing is sure yet. Thanks to "cockpit" and there Lufthansa strike. Thanks for the cancelation of my flight...!! and a never answering hotline...
back on track: thorsten and I have our first fixed race. We'll start in Heidelberg at the famous half-marathon. I'm really looking forwar to that, also because a lot of friends and siblings are running this race, too.
Hope to get Franky an Michael to Heidelberg, too. Would be great for our first "team-building" and just see my friends again.
at the moment I'm in a very positive mood. just happy that, for me personally, the fun of racing is back. it's because of having a goal, which i didn't really have for years. Thanks Gore. :)
dear friends keep on running. would be great read some comments here.

Das wäre was. :)
Frohes Laufen euch allen.
keep on running.

back from track... just finished a short run in the wood and snow of bayreuth. feels very good in these days - between long learning days for the exams...
question of the day (of my brother): did you really think well about participating in this race? are you sure what you are doing here? ... the answer can just be: NO. if we had done we would not have announced. :)

the story begins... The race: probably the most intensive, craziest and most beautiful 8-day-race in the Alps. The GORE-TEX(R) Transalpine Run. Round 6 this year. Back in 2009... 4 young dreamers work for the company - that guarantees to keep you dry - at the race. follow the competition during 8 beautiful days through the valleys. one day 3 of the good looking uniformed GORE-TEX(R) Merchandisers had the chance to really feel the race! stage 6 on a great trail through the Uina Canyon from Scouls to Mals was more than impressive. Unforgetable... At the beginnung you just think all these athletes here are just crazy. Why do they all accept the pain during the week... And after the week: you still think they are crazy, but you understand them. at least a little bit... With the support of the title sponsor of the race, in September we really get the chance to make this extraordinary experience... can see what's really behind this adventure GORE-TEX(R) Transalpine Run... the bib is fixed. what remains? ... ... a lot of questions... how big is our motivation..? is there really a chance to finish this crazy thing? can we end the race as friends...???
